California Sex Offenders Now Tracked By GPS

Thousands of sex offenders on parole in California are now being tracked by GPS devices, at a high price to taxpayers.

Outfitting nearly 7,000 sex offender parolees cost the state nearly $10 million, and the 24 hours a day, seven days a week tracking is costing another $14.5 million per year – that comes out to $6 per parolee, per day. Incidents of child sexual abuse increasing; counties trying to cope

As many as one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthday, according to Darkness to Light, a national non-profit organization dealing with child sexual abuse.

"We can no longer put our head in the sand," said Billie Jo Weyant, director of Citizens Against Physical, Sexual and Emotional Abuse. "Until people face the reality, we need to bring abuse of all sorts to the forefront. If it's kept a secret and if it's kept under wraps, it gives the perpetrators every right to keep doing what they're doing.
