Barron police have arrested a man in connection with an early-morning break-in and rape last week in the city. The suspect has since been criminally charged.
Joseph R. Stoeberl, 38, of Barron had his initial appearance Jan. 22 in Barron County Circuit Court before Judge Tim Doyle on charges of second-degree sexual assault with use of force, burglary and criminal damage to property. A 16-year-old male and a 15-year-old male were arrested Sunday on sexual assault charges involving an intoxicated 14-year-old female.
According to Sgt. Dave Thompson, with the Sonoma County Sheriff's Department Domestic Violence and sexual Assault Unit, at about 2:23 a.m. Sunday, deputies from the Sonoma Valley sheriff's substation stopped a vehicle at Verano Avenue and Riverside Drive for suspected drunk driving. Three juvenile males, all Agua Caliente residents ranging in age from 12 to 16, and a juvenile female, age 14, also a Sonoma Valley resident, were in the vehicle.
The female told deputies that she had been sexually assaulted by at least one of the males in the car. The female was transported to Sonoma Valley Hospital where she was treated for heavy alcohol intoxication and later released. Fatal stabbings at 30-year high
The number of fatal stabbings in England and Wales rose from 269 to 270 last year, the highest total for at least 30 years, the Home Office said yesterday.

Houston's violent crime shows slight increase in 2008
Violent crimes in Houston increased slightly in 2008 compared with 2007 but property crimes dropped sharply last year — showing a more than 10 percent decline, according to statistics released Thursday by Houston police officials.
Among violent crimes, homicides dropped by 16 percent, but sexual assaults increased more than 8 percent from 2007, officials said. Aggravated assaults showed the largest increase in the violent crime category - at 9.1 percent.

A former Belchertown police officer pleaded innocent Wednesday in Hampden Superior Court to a charge of forcible rape of a child.

Police investigate 2 OKC rapes
The rapes and abductions of two women may have been committed by a man whom police believe may have attacked others.
John Early Stepney Jr., 31, was arrested Thursday in connection with two assaults that were reported within three weeks of each other in northwest Oklahoma City, police said.
Stepney faces complaints including rape, rape by instrumentation, pointing a firearm, armed robbery and vehicle larceny, police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said. A judge denied bail until charges are filed...More Here...
Library Rape Victim To Get Help
A team of volunteer therapists is taking over the care of an 18-year-old woman who survived being raped and beaten nearly to death at the Bloomingdale Regional Library last April.
Family friend and physical therapist Cheryl Zemina said therapy services that had been covered by the state's insurance soon will end for the young woman, who is back at her South Shore home. Professionals in the community, however, have offered to make sure she receives all the therapy she needs.
The former East Bay High School student, whose name is being withheld to protect her identity, was attacked the evening of April 24 while returning books to the library...More Here...

Texas death row inmate pulls out eye, eats it
A Texas death row inmate with a history of mental problems pulled out his only good eye and told authorities he ate it. Andre Thomas, 25, was arrested for the fatal stabbings of his estranged wife, their young son and her 13-month-old daughter in March 2004. Their hearts also had been ripped out. He was convicted and condemned for the infant's death.
While in the Grayson County Jail in Sherman, Thomas plucked out his right eye before his trial later in 2004. A judge subsequently ruled he was competent to stand trial.
A death-row officer at the Polunsky Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice found Thomas in his cell with blood on his face and took him to the infirmary...More Here...
Zendejas attorneys fail in effort to dismiss rape charges
A judge Friday denied a defense motion to dismiss two rape charges against former NFL placekicker Tony Zendejas.
Zendejas' attorneys argued in Pomona Superior Court there wasn't enough evidence presented at October's preliminary hearing for the former Los Angeles Ram to be held to answer on charges related to Zendejas' alleged drugging of the woman he is accused of raping.
Prosecutors said Zendejas, an NFL placekicker from 1985 to 1995, drugged a woman in January 2008 at the restaurant he owns in San Dimas - Zendejas Mexican Restaurant - then raped and sodomized her at a nearby motel while she was incapacitated...More Here...

DeSoto County Man Accused of Killing Stepdaughter
A DeSoto County man is in jail accused of killing his stepdaughter. It's the county's first homicide of the year. Police say Kimberly Field was trying to stop a fight between her mother and stepfather when she was shot and killed.
Desoto County Sheriff Bill Racso says Wednesday night deputies got a call about a deadly domestic issue.

Man charged with assaulting toddlers, pregnant girlfriend
New Bedford police say they arrested a local dad last night on charges that he attacked his 1-year-old son, his pregnant girlfriend and his girlfriend’s 4-year-old son during a series of “vicious and savage acts of violence.”
Angel Matos-Garcia, 32, was arrested last night for allegedly assaulting his 1-year-old son, his girlfriend who is three months pregnant with his baby and his girlfriend’s 4-year-old child from a previous relationship, according to New Bedford Police.
Matos-Garcia, who lives on North Front Street in New Bedford, will be arraigned in New Bedford District Court this morning on multiple felonies, New Bedford Police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Silva said in a statement last night. Charges include assault and battery and mayhem, he said...More Here...

Batterer charged in deaths of his mom, ex
A chronic domestic batterer murdered his ex-girlfriend, dressed up her body and put makeup on her face, leaving a twisted love note in blood on the wall after killing his own mother during a weekend rampage in New Bedford, authorities said yesterday.
Gary Anthony Gomes, 35, of New Bedford was held without bail yesterday in New Bedford District Court on two counts of murder and one count of kidnapping.
